The Role

You will take technical responsibility and contribute to key engineering decisions across the design, commissioning, maintenance and ongoing support of synchronous machine control, excitation and protection systems.

Working directly with asset owners to make informed decisions about maintaining, upgrading and investing in critical plant. You will work closely with engineers and project managers across the wider EES team to deliver practical engineering solutions and maintain the high standards of technical expertise for which EES is known.

Responsibilities will include:

• Design and integration of excitation, control and protection systems
• Commissioning, testing and maintenance activities
• Fault finding, troubleshooting and technical investigations
• Supporting plant upgrades and modernisation projects
• Technical consultancy and asset assessment activities
• Preparing engineering documentation and technical reports
• Providing direct technical support to customers
• Supporting projects across Scotland, the UK and occasionally overseas

Requirements

You will be an experienced electrical engineer with a strong technical foundation in power systems and controls. You enjoy solving complex engineering problems, working directly with customers and taking ownership of technical decisions from concept through to commissioning and operational support.

Essential

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical and/or Electronic Engineering from an accredited institution, or an equivalent combination of education and experience with electrical power systems and control systems.
• Alternatively, an HNC/HND in Electrical and/or Electronic Engineering (or a related discipline) with demonstrable experience in a similar role.
• Experience working on power generation and industrial sites.
• A strong understanding of power conversion systems including DC drives, LV PWM drives, MV PWM drives and LCI systems.
• Knowledge of synchronous machine and excitation control system theory and practical application.
• Experience using engineering design software and associated technical tools.
• Strong technical report writing and documentation skills.
• The ability to analyse complex engineering problems, make informed technical decisions and apply a high level of attention to detail.
• Excellent planning and organisational skills, including time management, task prioritisation and resource coordination.
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively, engage directly with customers and present technical information to a range of audiences.

Desirable

• Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
• Demonstrable expertise in excitation systems gained through substantial experience in power generation, electrical power systems and controls.
• Experience leading projects, coordinating resources and managing technical work packages.
• Progress towards, or a commitment to achieving, professional registration status.
